My gaze whipped back to Bastian, but he didnât meet my eyes. Shame colored every line of his face as his jaw tightened.
âWhy do you owe me?â I was unable to hold the question in any longer.
He lifted his head, spearing me with his sharp gaze. âI just do.â
And then he was gone. Without another word, without any explanation, he just left the room, abandoning me to get back on my own.
Some partner he was.
For the firstâwell, second, but semantics and all thatâtime since Iâd been bitten, I looked down at my injured arm. While still a bloody mess, the skin had knitted back together, the flesh seemingly healed. With nothing else to do besides fret over what the fuck was going on with Bastian, I hopped off the examination table and went to the sink.
I was still reeling from his abrupt departure and Thomas losing it over the Clayborn pack, and all the rest of the changes my life had undergone in the last day and a half. And why did Booth bite me? And why was Simon so freaked?
Well, that one might have made a little more sense now that Iâd made out with his brother. As I washed the blood off my hand, I thought about Bastianâs lips on mine, his hand in my hair, the scent of himâ¦
Stop it. This is exactly the wrong thing to be thinking about.
As much as my conscience was yelling at me, I couldnât stop the shiver that worked its way through me at the thought of Bastianâs hand in my hair, the way he pulled me off his neck and kissed me, the heat of his skin under my palms.
Fuck.
Was it just because he was willing? Was it the blood? Was it the thoughts and images that bombarded me when I read his soul? I could almost feel them again, the memory so vivid. Was that what he wanted? Or because he knew what I was, was that all he was willing to show me?
A cold bucket of libido-killing ice washed over me. He knew I was a soul reader, he could be guarding his mind against me, only showing me those things to hide what was really in his heart. I couldnât say why that felt like a betrayal, why it felt like Iâd been stabbed in the chest at the thought, but it did.
But didnât he deserve to hide from me? Wasnât that his right? I was offered his blood, not his soul. I was offered sustenance, not his secrets. Still, the thought of him hiding on purpose hurt me in ways I was not prepared for.
Then I groaned out loud, the sound echoing off the sterile walls and metal cabinets filled with medical supplies. Simon was so right, and I was an idiot for thinking he had no idea. Bastian and I should most definitely not enter into a relationship.
It was going to be blood bags or nothing from here on out.
After Iâd washed off all the blood and cleaned up the sink with cleanser and some paper towels, Axel strode back in the room.
